Building Sustainably

We are committed to environmental sustainability

We are experts in the re-use of existing buildings with many of our projects focussed on repurposing the built environment, rather than demolishing viable structures.

Any new build developments are focussed on underutilised brownfield sites and we go beyond Building Regulation requirements to ensure our projects are highly insulated, employ re-usable technologies and natural passive ventilation. This benefits both the environment and our occupiers.

Planning

We employ ecologists and other specialist contractors to survey the area and ensure the local environment is protected during the development process. We aim to minimise any impact on local wildlife and ensure local air quality is preserved.

Only once we have identified how to mitigate impact on the local environment, do we begin the physical development process.

Building Control

All our homes adhere strictly to Building Regulations.

Recent changes in the regulations include improvements to ventilation, steps to conserve fuel and power, strategies to mitigate risks of potential overheating; and provisions for electric vehicle charging.

At Cross Stone, we welcome these new regulations which raise the bar for the industry and drive improvements in our collective environmental impact.

Design & Specification

During the design process, we specify products with the lowest environmental impact. Examples of sustainable design features used include:

  • Taps with aerators to reduce waterflow and limit waste

  • Dual flush systems in WC cisterns to reduce water consumption

  • LED lightbulbs to save on energy consumption

  • “A” energy rated appliances in kitchens

  • Permeable road surfaces to improve drainage

  • Electric vehicle charging points

These features benefit both the environment and residents through increasing efficiency and reducing the usage of utilities.

Construction

We encourage our contractors to take a fabric first approach to ensure integrity in building structures and reuse where possible of existing building technologies and features. We aim to achieve Net Zero Carbon and the highest EPC ratings through the construction process. In addition, we actively promote local working and the use of local contractors and supply chains
